The US is aiming to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, beginning with a proposed 30-day cease-fire. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to demand sanctions relief as a part of this deal, which could allow Russia to quickly restock its military capabilities. Analysts warn that any such relief could enable Russia to access vital technology for its defense sector, particularly US-made microchips, which it currently sources through black market channels or from China after sanctions were imposed post-invasion.
It is unquestionable that Russia will take immediate advantage of any easing in sanctions that allows it to access the components it badly needs to replenish its dilapidated military.
The issue of easing of the sanctions is clearly on the table, and the Kremlin is preparing demands and conditions as negotiations approach.
