Pope Leo XIV met with Sviatoslav Shevchuk, head of Ukraine's Greek Catholic Church, to discuss the war in Ukraine and prisoner exchanges. Shevchuk thanked the Pope for his peace efforts and invited him to visit Ukraine. The Pope has shown consistent support for Ukraine, emphasizing the need for peace and the return of prisoners and children. While acknowledging the importance of dialogue for resolution, the Vatican stated a papal visit was premature despite interest from President Zelenskyy. Pope Leo XIV vowed to do everything possible to aid in fostering discussions for peace.
"I carry in my heart the sufferings of the beloved Ukrainian people. May all the prisoners be freed, and may the children return to their families."
"The Holy See is always ready to help bring enemies together, face to face, to talk to one another, so that peoples everywhere may once more find hope and recover the dignity they deserve, the dignity of peace."
