Renewed clashes between Ethiopian troops and the Fano armed group in the Amhara region have resulted in significant casualties, with the military claiming over 300 Fano fighters killed. The conflict stems from a betrayal felt by Fano after the 2022 peace deal with the Tigray People's Liberation Front. Tensions have escalated since July 2023, leading to fierce combat and mutual accusations of misconduct from both sides.
According to the army, 317 Fano fighters were killed and 125 others injured during renewed clashes, although Fano spokespeople contest these claims, asserting their losses are much lower.
Yohannes Nigusu, a Fano spokesperson, stated that 602 federal soldiers died in the recent fighting, highlighting significant casualties on both sides amid ongoing tensions.
