Peace talks are set to commence in Angola between the Congolese government and the M23 rebel group, aiming to address the intensifying conflict in eastern DRC. This comes after previous rejections of dialogue by the DRC government under President Felix Tshisekedi. The recent surge in violence has led to thousands of deaths and millions displaced. With both factions sending delegations to Luanda, Angola is facilitating these negotiations, following a prior impasse over direct talks. M23 claims its military advancements have compelled the government to negotiate for peace.
The conflict in the eastern DRC escalated early this year when M23 rebels carried out a lightning offensive and seized the strategic cities of Goma and Bukavu.
M23 leader Bertrand Bisimwa declared last week that the rebels had forced Tshisekedi to the negotiating table, affirming that peace begins with dialogue.
