Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced the suspension of a ceasefire with a dissident faction from the FARC guerrilla group, despite ongoing peace negotiations. The ceasefire, which had been in place since December 2023, expired without an extension. Petro stated he will not continue the ceasefire regarding civilian populations, but reiterated that peace talks will persist. The NGO Indepaz criticized the suspension, warning it could escalate conflict in affected communities, while Petro's broader goal of 'paz total' remains challenged amid resistance from armed groups refusing peace.
In a statement, Petro noted, "I do not extend the bilateral and temporary ceasefire with respect to the civilian population," indicating a shift in negotiations.
Despite the suspension of the ceasefire, Petro reassured that this does not signify the end of peace talks, emphasizing the commitment to dialogue.
Indepaz's Leonardo Gonzalez warned that the collapse of the ceasefire is "a serious setback for the communities that inhabit territories historically affected by the armed conflict," highlighting potential danger.
Petro's initiative for 'paz total' aims to engage in dialogue with various armed groups, yet many remain resistant to negotiations with the government.
