A soldier from Cambodia was killed in a brief skirmish with the Thai army along a contentious stretch of border in Preah Vihear province. According to Cambodian military officials, the confrontation, lasting around ten minutes, was initiated by Thai troops attacking Cambodian soldiers engaged in routine patrol. Conversely, the Thai military claimed their forces responded to initial gunfire from Cambodia. The longstanding border dispute dates back to the French colonial era and has led to military clashes over the years, including a notable incident in 2008 over an ancient temple site.
"Our soldier died in the trenches. The Thais came to attack us," he alleged.
The clash took place after Cambodian soldiers began firing first. The Thai army said in a statement that its soldiers fired back in response.
