Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen expressed optimism about a potential peace deal between Ukraine and Russia within the year during a World Economic Forum event. Citing her recent visit to Kyiv, she emphasized the strong desire for peace among Ukrainians. Valtonen, while blaming Russia for the ongoing conflict, noted that both nations have shown readiness for negotiations, albeit with significant differences regarding territorial concessions. U.S. President Donald Trump has also committed to facilitating a peace agreement, though the specifics remain uncertain. Valtonen warned that past neutrality pledges failed to protect nations against Russian aggression.
"I'm pretty sure there will be a peace agreement this year," said Valtonen, speaking at an event at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Tuesday.
Valtonen went on to blame Russia for the conflict, which will be three years old in February.
Trump's proposed Ukraine envoy, retired lieutenant general Keith Kellogg, suggested that it could involve Ukraine handing over land to Russia and pledging to remain neutral.
Valtonen said that in the past, a neutrality pledge had not protected Ukraine or other countries in Russia's orbit.
