"One phrase in particular is a signifier of excellence: Goodyear welt," explains Ohrn. This labor-intensive process involves stitching a layer of leather between the shoe's upper and outsole—providing waterproofing and the ability to replace the outsole easily, a hallmark of high-quality craftsmanship.
