During a 4x200-meter indoor relay at the Virginia state championships, runner Kaelen Tucker was struck in the head by a baton swung by Alaila Everett, leading to a concussion and a misdemeanor charge for assault and battery against Everett. The race situation was intense due to close quarters and the nature of indoor track relays, often involving collisions. The event concluded with Everett's team being disqualified after the incident, raising questions about safety and the rules governing indoor races.
As we got around the curve she kept bumping me in my arm and then finally when we got off the curve I , like, slowly started passing her, and then that's when she just hit me with a baton, and I fell off the track, Ms. Tucker told the local TV station WSLS.
Ms. Everett now faces a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery, said Bethany Harrison, the commonwealth attorney for the city of Lynchburg.
Indoor track, and indoor relays in particular, can be rough. Limited space and fast athletes lead to jostling, collisions and falls.
Her family said that she had sustained a concussion.
