Elaine Stypula Dies During the 2025 Hardrock 100

Elaine Stypula, an experienced ultrarunner, died early in the 2025 Hardrock 100 event, soon after it began in Silverton, Colorado. The San Juan County Sheriff's office responded to a medical emergency call at 9:02 a.m. near the Little Giant Basin, where CPR efforts were underway. Despite rescue team efforts, Stypula was pronounced dead at 10:27 a.m. She completed over 100 ultramarathons in her career, including prestigious events like Marathon des Sables and Badwater 135 Mile. The Hardrock 100 community expressed their deep sorrow over her passing.
