Different Sides of the Same Coin: A Conversation With Molly Seidel
"The Western States 100 was always a dream for me,"
"I'm such a Scott Jurek fangirl."
"I think a lot of trail runners get weirdly intimidated by road running, and I think they forget that we're all the same. It's just different flavors."
"On the other side of things, a lot of road runners are deeply intimidated by anything trail running. It has its own specific knowledge."
"Once I actually opened up the space to listen to what I wanted to do, [trail running] is what I wanted to do."
Seidel read Born to Run at age 12 and first learned about the Western States 100. The 2020 Olympic Marathon bronze medalist will make her ultramarathon debut at the January 2026 Bandera 50k as a stepping stone toward the Western States 100. Seidel admires Scott Jurek and long considered Western States a dream. The shift toward trail running follows difficult years of injuries, missing the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, and departing Puma at the end of 2024. Seidel notes mutual intimidation between road and trail runners and chose trail running after opening space to follow her preference.
