Athing Mu's hopes for a repeat came crashing down on the backstretch of the first lap of the 800-meter final at U.S. track trials when she fell and finished last.
Mu could still go to Paris as part of the U.S. relay pool, but the U.S. trials format is unforgiving, with only the top three finishers making the Olympic team regardless of past performances.
After winning numerous championships before turning 21, Mu faced pressure and the spotlight before taking a break and rediscovering her love for the sport leading into the meet.
