"Pete I don't blame anyone for trying to come here, to make a better life, and I deplore the stuff you see in some of the press. Having said that, immigration's too high. We're poor at building housing and services for the level of immigration we have. Equally, dentist appointments, school places there's a disconnect between the number of people coming in and the services we're providing for them; it causes problems for the people who are here."
Fraz is a law graduate training to be a commercial solicitor who was only recently eligible to vote and describes himself as pretty central. Fraz was born in Pakistan; his father claimed asylum in the UK when Fraz was two and his parents spoke little English when they arrived. Pete is a 48-year-old software engineering manager from Barnard Castle who has voted for many parties and now votes Reform, describing himself as slightly right of centre. Pete designed a mobile trainspotting app and enjoyed fish cakes and venison at the meal. Pete sympathises with people seeking a better life but says immigration is too high and that housing, dentist appointments and school places are not keeping up with population growth. Fraz asks which categories of immigrants would be undesirable and notes that asylum seekers and illegal migrants are a tiny proportion.
