Bord na Móna Recycling workers have deferred a planned strike due to management's agreement to address their employment conditions amid a proposed sale to KWD Recycling. The decision comes after union Siptu expressed concerns about labor agreements related to the sale. The strike, initially set for next Wednesday, would have affected waste collection in several counties. Union officials highlighted the importance of a Registered Employment Agreement to safeguard workers' rights as discussions with the Workplace Relations Commission are set to begin soon.
"Following acceptance in principle by management of the concerns our members raised in relation to the protection of their terms and conditions of employment if a proposed sale of the company takes place, they have decided to defer strike action scheduled to take place next week," said Siptu divisional organiser, Adrian Kane.
"It remains the position of our members that selling the last remaining publicly owned domestic waste collection service into the private sector is a backwards step in relation to the future of the industry in Ireland."
"The move by management to accept that the initial guarantees it offered in relation to our members terms and conditions of employment were unsatisfactory is welcomed," he said.
"The union believes that setting up a Registered Employment Agreement is the best way to ensure its members' terms and conditions are protected."
