Skype for consumers 'retiring' in May
Briefly

Microsoft has officially announced the discontinuation of Skype as a paid service for consumers, effective May 2025. This decision follows the recent end of Skype to Phone services and reflects a larger strategic shift towards Microsoft Teams. While Skype will still be available for Business, regular consumers are encouraged to transition to Teams, which offers similar features. Users have until then to export their data or download it, with many having already moved to free alternatives like WhatsApp. The once-popular service, launched in 2003, is now effectively retiring from the consumer space.
Code was first spotted by XDA this morning as a message inside of the latest Skype for Windows preview reading "Starting in May, Skype will no longer be available. Continue your calls and chats in Teams."
The tech giant 'fessed up shortly after that the service will be no more from May this year, although this does not impact Skype for Business.
