The New England Aquarium has introduced a new private island for its aging African penguin colony, catering specifically to the needs of geriatric birds aged 14 to 34. This unique space aims to provide a serene environment while accommodating medical needs and behavioral requirements. The island features accessibility adaptations such as flat areas with mats and ramps, and the six resident penguins receive specialized diets and treatments, including acupuncture and physical therapy, ensuring they live out their golden years comfortably and healthily.
"Our goal is to take a proactive approach to managing geriatric animals in an environment that better meets their physical and behavioral needs," said Kristen McMahon, the Aquarium's Curator of Pinnipeds and Penguins.
The island features flat areas with mats and sloping ramps to make for easy access, ultimately providing a calm, comfortable environment that supports the penguins' health.
More than half of the aquarium's penguin colony has met or surpassed their typical life expectancy of 10 to 15 years in the wild, leading to a focused care strategy.
Special diets and treatments, including daily eye drops, foot treatments, acupuncture, and physical therapy, ensure that the geriatric penguins receive optimal care in their retirement.
