As the chair of the philosophy department at the University of Utah, I have experienced a troubling shift in my pride for the institution due to recent legislation that targets diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. An anti-DEI bill has led to the closure of essential resource centers, limiting support for underrepresented groups. Additional policies, such as the 'bathroom bill' and restrictions on faculty speech, have created an environment of censorship and concern for academic freedom, which deeply affects both students and faculty members.
This year, my first as chair, has seen profound upheaval. The State Legislature passed an anti-DEI bill, leading to the closure of vital support centers.
The imposition of a 'bathroom bill' and other restrictions on diversity initiatives has replaced my pride in the university with grief and shame.
