Patricia Gibson reflects on her experience of losing her job after 17 years with the federal government. The Office of Personnel Management, historically unnoticed, faced mass firings as the new administration aimed to downsize. Despite pressure on employees to accept job terminations with offers of pay, Gibson resisted and opted for administrative leave. Now at 50, three years short of early retirement, she expresses frustration over the impact on her retirement plans and those of her colleagues, feeling that many were coerced into decisions against their interests.
Because in February, after working for the federal government for 17 years, Gibson learned that she would lose her job as a contract specialist at the Office of Personnel Management, through no fault of her own.
A lot of people got bullied into taking that fork in the road and but I said, I don't care-you have to walk me out of here.
Gibson, who had just turned 50, was three years of service away from early retirement. At this point now I'll have to pretty much start over.
I think they messed up a lot of people that planned on retiring from the government.
