Skype, launched in 2003, was an early leader in peer-to-peer video communication. However, after Microsoft acquired it, the platform lost its edge due to an unpopular redesign and competition from Zoom, which emerged during the remote work surge caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Microsoft has since integrated Skype into Teams, gradually phasing out Skype for Business since 2017. Teams has gained prominence as Microsoft's focus shifted towards collaboration tools, especially after regulatory actions required Teams to be decoupled from the Office suite in the EU and globally.
Skype revolutionized video communication but faltered after Microsoft acquisition, losing market share to Zoom, especially during the shift to remote work during COVID-19.
