Google offers buyouts to staff in latest round of cost cutting
Briefly

Google has initiated a new round of buyouts for employees across various divisions including search, advertising, research, and engineering as part of its cost-cutting strategy. The company announced this initiative amid a prolonged decline in demand for its services following the economic boom during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the buyouts, Google is encouraging remote employees living close to offices to transition to a hybrid work schedule, fostering in-person collaboration. This follows earlier layoffs of 12,000 employees in 2023.
A number of teams are also asking remote employees who live near an office to return to a hybrid work schedule in order to bring folks more together in-person.
Earlier this year, some of our teams introduced a voluntary exit program with severance for U.S.-based Googlers, and several more are now offering the program.
