Google offers buyouts to staff in latest round of cost cutting
Briefly

Google is initiating voluntary buyouts for employees in various divisions, including search, advertising, research, and engineering, as part of ongoing cost-cutting measures. A spokesperson confirmed that this initiative follows earlier buyouts offered in 2023, when the company reduced its workforce by 12,000 amid changing economic conditions post-COVID-19. Additionally, Google is encouraging remote employees living close to offices to adopt a hybrid work model to foster better in-person collaboration. These strategies reflect Google's efforts to align its workforce and operations with evolving market demands.
Earlier this year, some of our teams introduced a voluntary exit program with severance for U.S.-based Googlers, and several more are now offering the program to support our important work ahead.
A number of teams are also asking remote employees who live near an office to return to a hybrid work schedule in order to bring folks more together in-person.
