Ms Murphy was murdered by Jozef Puska while running in Co Offaly in January 2022. Mr Casey, her boyfriend, expressed regret over COVID-19 restrictions that prevented them from embracing just before her death. He recalled feeling frustrated and reaching out to her a couple of days before the incident, wanting to ignore restrictions. After not receiving any response, he later learned of her murder, which left him devastated. Mr Casey also settled a defamation case against the BBC regarding remarks made about his victim impact statement.
Mr Casey expressed deep regret about complying with social distancing rules, wishing he could have embraced Ms Murphy just moments before her tragic death. He felt the moment was important, saying, "In the aftermath, I thought about it a lot. Why didn't I just say feck the restrictions, who cares. Why didn't I just hold her." He had wanted to see her and reached out but received no response for several hours, heightening his distress.
Upon feeling increasingly agitated from the distance imposed by social restrictions, Mr Casey reached out to Ms Murphy, stating, "I said feck these restrictions, I'm sick of not being able to see you, lets go for a McDonald's or something." However, he received no response, which was unusual and added to his fear and sadness.
