What's the Rush? Why Some People Choose to Stay Single
A study of 369 college students examined reasons for choosing to remain single, including never having been romantically involved. Participants with no prior romantic relationship reported lower relationship readiness and fewer dating and romantic experiences than peers and than their own ideals. Despite this, they anticipated more future dating prospects. Social context and apprehensiveness were identified as primary themes behind staying single at their life stage. Lack of relational experience did not appear to affect beliefs about permanent singlehood, and participants did not differ in fear of singleness, suggesting singlehood is experienced as a choice without necessarily negative outcomes.
