Dating app users often see men stating their height while including the phrase 'because apparently that matters', which conveys a frustrated mindset. According to Kayla Kibbe, this reflects a presumption that all women are shallow and height-obsessed, portraying these men as operating from a place of anger or confusion about societal standards. Kibbe argues that the height standards they worry about are not created by women, but rather stem from internalized patriarchal beliefs that impose unrealistic expectations on everyone. This act of stating their height is seen as a passive-aggressive response to societal pressures.
"They're making a presumption about what all women want and painting us with the same passive-aggressive brush," she explains.
"The belief these men are responding to isn't totally unfounded, but the height standard to which many men seem to feel subjected is not one that was devised by women."
