'Too broke to break up': More Americans than ever are staying in relationships - because they can't afford to be single
Briefly

A recent survey reveals that 24% of Americans are trapped in relationships they wish to leave due to financial constraints. With soaring rent and inflation, many couples find financial stability by sharing costs such as rent and bills, rendering romantic motives secondary. Gen Z faces particularly high breakup costs, averaging $3,862 when considering expenses like solo rent and retail therapy. The situation is exacerbated in high-cost areas, such as New York City, where couples save significant amounts by remaining together financially.
Nearly one in four Americans say they're stuck in a relationship they can't afford to leave, according to a new national survey from Self Financial.
'While no one likes the idea of having to stay with a partner for financial reasons, for some this may be the only way to financially keep their head above water,' said Alex Beene.
It's a trend that's especially brutal in high-cost cities like New York, where Manhattan couples can save over $50,000 per year by shacking up.
For Gen Z, breaking up is especially expensive; the average cost of a breakup for a Zoomer is $3,862.
