A Black educator in a racially charged school environment faces distressing issues related to overt racism exhibited by colleagues. Despite holding a leadership position, the educator feels compelled to maintain a facade of professionalism around racist co-workers, which creates ethical dilemmas. Students, predominantly Black and Latino, suffer from the hostile environment created by these educators, prompting the teacher to grapple with personal discomfort against the need for collegiality. The educator struggles to balance honesty, moral obligation, and professional duty amidst a culture of silence from the administration.
I dislike my racist co-workers intensely, but I fake collegiality to make it through the day. This makes me feel like a hypocrite and a fraud.
I am disgusted by these colleagues. I have fielded so many complaints from students who are hearing racist, dehumanizing things from teachers.
