Does a Rich Sexual History Improve Love-or Undermine It?
Sexual satisfaction is a core component of relational well-being and strongly predicts overall relationship satisfaction for both men and women. Relationship quality and sexual satisfaction reinforce each other, with satisfying relationships promoting better sex and satisfying sex strengthening relationships. Sexual intimacy reflects emotional closeness, mutual responsiveness, and relational vitality, deepening attachment and reinforcing romantic bonds. Despite this, a greater number of premarital sexual partners predicts higher likelihood of divorce, creating a paradox given widespread premarital sex in contemporary Western societies. Premarital sexual experience may improve sexual performance, but evidence is controversial and weak.
