Watch a new bridge being carried along the river to Stratford
"Being at the southern end of a small peninsula of land with the two rivers on three sides and a railway line to the north, it's quite limited for access. Although there are pedestrian and cycle routes in and out of the site, the only road access to the estate is via the Bridgewater Road Bridge (E48 Bridge) which crosses the Waterworks River."
"The development is intended to be car-free, so while the bridge can carry vehicles, it's only intended for deliveries and the like, not car drivers. However, it will carry something else, as it will carry the utilities, including the hot water connection to the local district heating network. It's also going to be at a slightly different angle to the old bridge, with the estate end shifted southward by a few metres, which means it's now straight on with the road leading off the estate."
The Bridgewater Triangle development sits south of the Olympic Park where two rivers converge near Stratford High Street on a small peninsula with limited access. The only road access is via the Bridgewater Road Bridge (E48) over the Waterworks River. An old 1930s bridge in poor condition was demolished after a replacement was chosen. The estate is intended to be car-free; the new bridge will only carry deliveries and utilities, including a hot water connection to the district heating network. A temporary footbridge provided access during works. A pre-assembled 44-metre, 320-tonne bridge was barged in, lifted, rotated and lowered onto prepared concrete supports. The bridge was constructed by Kilnbridge.
