""That block will eventually be used for construction staging and the new downtown station," Ross said."
""The building at 45 N. First is being demolished because it's considered an attractive nuisance in its current dilapidated condition," Ross said."
""VTA needs to ensure that these projects are done with a focus on safety and not interfering with the right of way," said Bob Staedler, principal executive with Silicon Valley Synergy, a land-use and planning consultancy."
The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority began demolishing a building on North First Street near the future entrance of a proposed downtown BART station. VTA owns the building and other parcels on the block bounded by North First, West Santa Clara, North Market, and West St. John. The block is planned for construction staging and a new downtown station as part of BART Silicon Valley Phase 2. Demolition focused on the rear of the empty, dilapidated structure with front and rear areas fenced off. Rubble spilled onto the sidewalk. The BART extension is over budget and behind schedule. Empty downtown buildings have suffered unauthorized access and fires.
