The case for carpet
Briefly

Replacing wall-to-wall carpet with luxury vinyl plank seemed stylish but led to regrettable trade-offs. The new flooring looks better and is more sanitary, yet it lacks the livability aspects of carpet. Carpet historically has been out of favor, but designers note a resurgence in its popularity for creating nostalgic spaces. Carpet provides softness underfoot and muffles sound, which enhances comfort and quietness in the home. These qualities were underestimated until they were lost in the recent flooring change.
Wall-to-wall carpeting is coming back in a big way. There is something about it that feels very contrary right now, almost naughty, because it was so taboo for so long.
Carpet muffles sound, creating a quieter home environment. I didn’t realize how important that element of livability was until we replaced it with luxury vinyl plank.
Carpet provides a softness underfoot that luxury vinyl plank cannot replicate. It adds a comfort to spaces that cannot be replaced by other flooring options.
Even though our new floors are visually appealing and more sanitary, they lack the warmth and comfort that wall-to-wall carpet offered, making me miss it.
