"When you look at the median income needed to afford housing in San Jose, that expense is beyond what even our highest-paid employees can afford, Reddy said."
"We wanted this project to be akin to market-rate housing in terms of the quality of what we want to build, Reddy said."
San Jose Unified School District has proposed a 288-unit apartment project at 760 Hillsdale Ave, adjacent to State Route 87 and the district's Silicon Valley Education Campus. The development aims to provide workforce housing for rank-and-file employees who cannot afford local housing. The district plans to offer the apartments at rental rates affordable to its staff. The site is undeveloped land alongside Hillsdale Avenue. San Jose State University is planning a separate project replacing the Alquist State Building with at least 1,000 residences. Voters in the district approved a general obligation bond in November 2024 with potential proceeds of $1.15 billion.
