A coalition of 12 housing and insurance organizations warns that a lapse in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) could leave millions of Americans at risk.
The NFIP has been extended 31 times since 2017, and a lapse would disrupt the purchase of flood insurance in over 22,000 communities nationwide.
It is crucial that Congress reaches a consensus to avoid a government shutdown, as this would impact the NFIP and the ability to buy flood insurance.
If NFIP lapses, new flood insurance policies cannot be purchased, leaving buyers reliant on limited federal disaster aid, warned the coalition.
