"'This library grows from the city's history and wisdom, from samba that moves the body to the poetry that moves the heart,' says Francis Kéré."
"'It is a home for knowledge that belongs to everyone, a place where past and future meet beneath one roof, open to the city and to the sea that carries its stories to the world.'"
"'the tree of knowledge'"
The Biblioteca dos Saberes is a 40,000-square-meter public library and cultural center planned for Cidade Nova, Rio de Janeiro, commissioned by Rio de Janeiro City Hall. A vertical cylindrical volume, dubbed 'the tree of knowledge', organizes three levels of reading rooms, stacks, workshops, exhibition spaces, an auditorium, and a café, arranged by activity gradient. Perimeter terraces, shaded courtyards, open-air circulation, and a canopied amphitheater open the building to the city. Passive strategies include a perforated façade, rooftop gardens, and a central tower for ventilation and cooling. A pedestrian bridge will link the complex to a nearby Zumbi dos Palmares monument.
