The Florida Legislature is exploring the potential elimination of property taxes, with backing from Gov. Ron DeSantis. If implemented, Florida would be the first state without property taxes, a move that has garnered significant attention. A newly filed bill proposes a study to analyze the implications on the economy and public services if these taxes are removed. Given that Florida lacks an income tax, the assessment will consider alternatives like increased sales taxes to offset funding losses, with results due by October 1.
"I agree that taxing land/property is the more oppressive and ineffective form of taxation," the Republican wrote, responding to another user who asked if the taxes could be eliminated.
"Property taxes are local, not state. So we'd need to do a constitutional amendment (requires 60% of voters to approve) to eliminate them... we should put the boldest amendment on the ballot that has a chance of getting that 60%."
Sen. Jonathan Martin's bill calls on Florida's Office of Economic and Demographic Research to study the feasibility of eliminating property taxes.
