William Bonnici runs real estate offices in Beechworth and Wodonga in Victoria and in Albury, New South Wales, and regularly speaks with clients across both states. The Victorian government proposed legally guaranteeing at least two work-from-home days per week for employees. Bonnici said the proposal felt like government overreach and said he would consider closing Victorian offices if laws passed. Some staff already work from home without a formal regime, and certain tasks cannot be done remotely. Bonnici warned the laws could prompt claims of inequality from workers who must be onsite. Business Wodonga CEO Graham Jenkin said the proposal angered businesses and would add bureaucracy.
When state legislation starts dictating to a business - and I know that this government has been referred to as a dictatorship in recent years - as to how they should run their business, then it's going to make me question whether or not where you're based is where you should be based,
I wouldn't go to the extreme of saying that it would be the straw that breaks the camel's back, but this camel is definitely weary.
Laws are there to be put in place to protect employees from recalcitrant employers and to protect employers from lazy employees,
I don't see how this can be legislated and then policed effectively without someone claiming victimisation.
