Hayes on USWNT aims: Want to do more than win
Briefly

Emma Hayes, head coach of the US women's national team, has expressed her ambition to not only win but to build a robust program that sets a global standard. Since taking over in mid-2024, she led the team to an Olympic gold medal, marking its first victory since 2012. Hayes emphasizes the need for comprehensive development, particularly at the under-23 level, to address gaps caused by limited opportunities for younger players transitioning from junior teams.
I plan to do more than just win with this team. I'm a builder and I want to put in place a robust program with the right support.
I've sort of had to zoom out and reflect and say, 'listen, last year was extremely intense.' Like that's unusual to go from a club situation into a national team.
There are less U23s playing in the U.S., and I feel there's a lost generation that didn't get a lot of cap opportunities.
I want to set the bar for the global game off the field. That's one of my big goals.
