Python popularity boosted by AI coding assistants - Tiobe
Briefly

Python achieved a record rating of 26.98% in the Tiobe index for July 2025, reflecting its continued popularity. In August, Python maintained its top ranking despite a slight dip to 26.14%. CEO Paul Jansen suggested that AI coding assistants have contributed to Python's growth. He observed that with more code available from established languages, it makes sense for developers to prefer languages that have better AI support, avoiding obscure languages lacking in documentation or libraries.
"We thought Python couldn't grow any further, but AI code assistants let Python take yet another step forward," Jansen said.
This trend is visible in the Tiobe index, where a consolidation of languages at the top is seen.
Why would you start to learn a new obscure language for which no AI assistance is available?
There is more code available from popular programming languages to train the AI models.
