In 2017, Kayla Chadwick wrote the now-classic article, 'I Don't Know How To Explain To You That You Should Care About Other People.' It resonates with millions of people, myself included, reflecting an exasperation with a populace that seems ignorant of economics, history, politics, and the news. It’s understandable to feel frustration when people exercise their electoral power callously.
As we consider outreach to the conservative-leaning or undecided independent population, the question arises: are these people available to be convinced? I answer an unqualified 'yes.' While history shows the mechanics of bigotry, it’s crucial to keep in mind that progress is possible. The urge to dismiss potential outreach stems from a negative outlook, but the potential for change must not be forgotten.
In 2024, we need to reckon with the fact that we must explain to a large swathe of the population why they should care about other people. This is not just about emotional appeal; it's about a mission that involves reinforcing progressive values. Without this engagement, we risk being out of touch with those who might not share our views but are open to conversation.
