HMP Wormwood Scrubs is reviewing its protocol for sharing information on prisoners with serious medical conditions following the death of a 32-year-old prisoner, Darren Boamah, who had epilepsy. An investigation revealed that prison staff were unaware of his condition, despite him informing healthcare staff during initial screenings. On January 3, he pressed his emergency cell bell but was found unresponsive in his cell hours later. CCTV footage contradicted reports of staff checks, and documentation related to his care has reportedly been lost. Recommendations have been accepted to improve awareness of severe medical conditions among prison staff.
Darren Boamah died in his cell in HMP Wormwood Scrubs last January with wing staff not knowing he was epileptic. An investigation found more should be done to inform staff of prisoners' serious medical conditions.
Following Mr. Boamah's death, it was indicated that staff awareness regarding prisoners with serious medical conditions needs improvement, especially relating to medication adherence.
The officer's report indicated she checked on Mr. Boamah before going off duty, but CCTV footage shows this did not happen. Documentation related to Mr. Boamah has been lost.
Healthcare staff called to Mr. Boamah's cell found him unresponsive and attempted CPR, but were met with rigor mortis, indicating he had been deceased for some time prior.
