Watchdog bans social media ads sharing discount codes for weight loss jabs
"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground."
"Social media posts sharing discount codes for online pharmacies that sell weight loss jabs have been banned by the advertising watchdog. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned 13 social media posts for using discount codes and referral links for the online pharmacies Voy, Zava, MedExpress and the online prescribing service UK Meds Direct. It is illegal to promote prescription-only medications, such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, to the general public."
The Independent emphasizes on-the-ground reporting across issues from reproductive rights to climate change and Big Tech and seeks donations to continue field journalism without paywalls. Social media posts sharing discount codes and referral links for online pharmacies selling prescription weight-loss injections were banned by the Advertising Standards Authority. Thirteen posts were identified promoting brands, using hashtags, showing injection pen images, and encouraging weight-loss journeys alongside discounts for sites including Voy, Zava, MedExpress and UK Meds Direct. Promotion of prescription-only medicines such as Wegovy and Mounjaro to the general public is illegal.
