University Leaders Propose New Research Funding Model
Briefly

A coalition of 10 research advocacy organizations introduced the Fiscal Accountability in Research (FAIR) model following government moves to cap indirect research costs. The model aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and clarity in federal research spending. Despite previous rejections of similar proposals, the current Congress is considering changes to indirect cost calculations. The FAIR plan was developed with extensive feedback from various stakeholders, including the academic community, private funders, and lawmakers. The goal is for Congress or the Office of Management and Budget to codify this proposal for adoption in the next two years.
The Joint Associations Group (JAG), including major academic associations, unveiled the Fiscal Accountability in Research, or FAIR, model to increase transparency and accountability in federal research funding.
JAG developed the FAIR plan with input from the academic research community, private funders, lawmakers, and federal administrators, aiming for adoption by Congress or the Office of Management and Budget.
