Ultra-processed foods threaten public health researchers DW 11/19/2025
"The key driver of the global rise in UPFs is the growing economic and political power of the UPF industry, and its restructuring of food systems for profitability above all else. The industry comprises UPF manufacturers at its core, but also a broader network of co-dependent actors who collectively drive the production, marketing and consumption of UPFs."
"It's about the evidence we have today about ultra-processed foods and human health,"
"What we know right now justifies global public action."
Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are linked to poor diets and increasing rates of obesity, cancer and other chronic diseases worldwide. UPFs now account for more than half of calories consumed in the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. Massive corporations have reshaped food systems, using aggressive marketing, inferior ingredients and industrial processes to expand consumption. Eight major manufacturers held 42% of the sector's $1.5 trillion in assets in 2021. The industry's economic and political power drives UPF production, marketing and consumption. Policy measures proposed include package warnings, marketing restrictions and taxes on certain UPFs. The term faces scientific criticism as overly simplistic.
