Thousands failing to tackle risk factors to prevent dementia, Irish researchers warn
"Thousands of people in Ireland are failing to treat risk factors such as hearing loss that leave them vulnerable to dementia, a new study reveals today. More than 70pc of adults aged 50 or older had at least four treatable risk factors for dementia, according to the findings from the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (Tilda) at Trinity College Dublin. This equates to more than half a million people nationwide."

A twelve-year initiative aims to show that dementia is not inevitable as people age. Thousands of people in Ireland are not treating modifiable risk factors that increase vulnerability to dementia, notably untreated hearing loss. More than 70% of adults aged 50 or older have at least four treatable risk factors for dementia, equating to more than half a million people nationwide. Many of these risks are addressable through medical treatment, lifestyle changes, and earlier detection. Addressing untreated hearing loss and other modifiable factors could reduce dementia risk in the older population.
