Oahu is facing a resurgence of the Zika virus, with a confirmed case imported by a traveler and two suspected exposures. Although Hawaii has the type of mosquitoes that can transmit Zika, the virus is not endemic to the state. The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) is actively engaged in vector control efforts to monitor and manage mosquito populations in affected neighborhoods. Visitors and residents are urged to take preventive measures, as Zika particularly poses risks to pregnant women due to potential severe birth defects.
The DOH asks for support in reducing the potential for the spread of Zika virus, which is carried by mosquitoes. Vector control teams are responding and will continue operations in areas where the individuals spent time, including neighborhoods in Waialua/Haleʻiwa area on Oʻahu.
Symptoms of Zika virus can include fever, rash, headache, joint pain, and pink eye. However, about 80 percent of Zika cases are asymptomatic.
