Emily Fiedel, a 17-year-old student from Palo Alto, was fatally struck by a Caltrain near East Charleston Road on Saturday. She is the seventh individual to die on the tracks in 2023. Caltrain has reported an increase in deaths over the years, with 15 fatalities in 2023 and 19 in the previous year, the most since 2015. To address safety concerns, Caltrain has appointed a Chief Safety Officer to develop a safety plan that will be reviewed by the board at year’s end.
