TB is the #1 killer among infectious diseases. A new study says its toll could mount
"As long as you breathe, you are at risk anywhere in the world."
"The impact of these cuts will be concentrated in countries with the least capacity to reallocate funding to close the gap created by cuts to health aid."
"I think the methods are pretty solid."
Tuberculosis remains the deadliest infectious disease worldwide, killing roughly 1.2 million people annually. Projected cuts to U.S. foreign health aid could produce up to 10 million additional TB cases and 2.2 million additional deaths by 2030 under a worst-case five-year scenario. Even rapid restoration of funding could still yield about 500,000 extra cases and nearly 100,000 extra deaths by decade’s end. The United States provided more than 55% of external TB control aid in 2024, including roughly $400 million from USAID. Countries with limited ability to reallocate funds will face the greatest service disruptions, and longer funding gaps will magnify the impact. Projections carry uncertainty because service disruption magnitudes and country responses will vary.
