Taoiseach slates vapes as the 'revenge of big tobacco' amid calls for UK-style ban
""I have a very low tolerance threshold for vapes to put it mildly," he said. "I believe they represent the revenge of big tobacco - when we took them on with cigarettes, we made significant inroads in de-normalising cigarette smoking from young people.""
""Vapes have come back. What worries me about vapes is they came onto the market, onto shelves without any proper health assessment in terms of their impact on young people's health and people's health quite generally. "There's lots of research globally now saying they are very bad, they are not good for people and can damage your health. "We are very concerned about it. Legislation is coming in and we will get that through and keep things under constant review in terms of what further measures we can take to deal with it.""
The Government may consider banning vaping in cars where children are present because of unresolved questions about health impacts. Ireland's vape market is estimated at €200m annually, sold across almost 3,500 outlets, mainly specialist and convenience stores, with retailer margins near 50%. Vapes entered the market without comprehensive health assessments of their effects on young people and the wider population. Emerging international research indicates vaping can damage health. New legislation is planned and authorities intend to keep measures under review, including potential restrictions in cars carrying children, playgrounds and other public areas. Ireland previously banned indoor smoking in 2004 as a pioneering public-health measure.
