Sumrin Kalia, a Pakistani woman, experienced early menopause at 37, encountering excessive bleeding and not receiving proper information. The World Health Organization states the menopause average is 45-55 years globally. Kalia's experience is echoed by other South Asian women, suggesting a trend of earlier menopause. Studies indicate South Asian American women face menopause at 48-49 years, contrasting with the US average of 52. In South Asia specifically, the menopause average is 46-47 years. Additional societal changes, such as declining fertility rates, may also influence this trend.
"I began experiencing excessive bleeding. I went to a doctor, who told me I might be perimenopausal," Kalia shared, reflecting her sudden onset of symptoms.
"No one explained it to me. It was very sudden. I started bleeding heavily and more frequently than usual," Kalia explained her experience with earlier menopause.
In South Asia, the average age for menopause is around 46 to 47 years, indicating a trend of earlier onset for women in this region.
A US-based study found South Asian American women reported an average menopause age of 48 or 49 years, which is earlier than the general US population.
