""Am I just going to stop this medication to stop having to deal with these coding issues and these scary bills?""
""When was the last time you were STD tested?""
""What's that?""
""Luckily, I had not caught HIV, but it was a wake-up call,""
Matthew Hurley sought PrEP after exposure to a partner who tested positive for HIV. PrEP reduces sexual transmission risk by about 99% when taken as prescribed. Hurley started PrEP and maintained it until an insurance change led to a new doctor who was unfamiliar with the medication. Billing and coding errors produced expensive, incorrect bills that made Hurley consider stopping the medication to avoid further paperwork and costs. Hurley lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and had community connections to people who survived the AIDS epidemic. Regular lab monitoring every three months was part of the regimen.
