Meta, Snap, TikTok and YouTube face lawsuits alleging intentional design of addictive platform features. Trials begin in Los Angeles Superior Court with about 1,600 plaintiffs including 350 families and 250 school districts. Plaintiffs allege addiction leads to depression, self-harm, eating disorders and other harms. The first case names a 19-year-old identified as KGM and her mother, suing TikTok, Meta and YouTube; Snap settled earlier. The outcome could determine more than 1,000 injury cases. The cases are coordinated through a judicial council proceeding. Plaintiffs seek financial damages and injunctions to force design changes and industry safety standards. Top executives and harm experts are expected to testify.
